Dear readers, we were wrong. After much deliberation, the Gucci Group opted to name Sarah Burton, Alexander McQueen’s former right-hand woman, as creative director of the brand. With Sarah at the helm, all can rest assured that the womenswear side of McQ will blossom; menswear, however, might suffer a bit from a certain lack of grit!

Only time will tell…

Before starting to jump around like absolute maniacs, it is imperative to mention that no official reports of this can be found at this particular moment!

That being said, Yours Truly has looked into a rumour that had been going around for a little moment and things are looking way up! In fact, while MGMT have mentioned that a few surprise venues will be added to their current tour throughout the summer, Quebec’s Summer Festival has a few suspicious blanks in their program. One of those said blanks is on July 10th where they have no current headlines on their big stage and it so happens that MGMT are enjoying 3 weeks off between June 20th and their appearance in the Bay Area!

Keep your fingers crossed my friends!

It’s been 29 years and 364 days since the enigmatic genius that was Ian Curtis passed away. While fellow band member Peter Hook will play Unknown Pleasures from start to finish at his Manchester club, we shall do what we do best to honor the man who made synth-driven rock what is it now, a good ole’ top 5!

Yours Truly would also like to tell anyone who hasn’t already seen Anton Corbjin’s incredible Control, that it’s seriously about time that you do so!

May your blissful soul rest in peace…

#1 Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart

Joy Division’s most well-known hit is a shoe-in at #1 and went on to become the anthem of a whole genre. I’m deeply sorry for every Depeche Mode fan out there that thought that they were trend-setters… they weren’t!

#2 Joy Division – She’s Lost Control

Written for a young unemployed woman who couldn’t live a normal life due to epilepsy that he met while working, She’s Lost Control describes one of her crisis. Proving once more that life is deeply ironic, he discovered, only a few days later, that he suffered from the same condition. Obviously concerned by the situation, Ian went on to call the said young woman only to find out that she had died during a seizure.

#3 Joy Division – Atmosphere

Few songs manage to teleport you in a totally different universe, but this one definitely does! Even if you’ve never really payed attention to Joy Division’s legacy, you will recognize this single once it enters its pre-chorus. It doesn’t hurt either that the video is absolutely stunning!

#4 Joy Division – Transmission

Released as a single only a year before Ian Curtis’ suicide, it is, in Yours Truly‘s opinion, one of Joy Division’s most accessible songs. I managed to find the amazing performance featured in Control for your enjoyment and to convince you that it should be the next movie to make it into your DVD collection!

#5 Joy Division – Disorder

One of Joy Division’s most emblematic recordings, it could have ended up anywhere in this Top 5!

Dior Homme vs Filmmaking Or How Everyone Lost…

If there’s a question in this world that has been asked far too many times, it’s the ever-going interrogation of the indie filmmaker: How do you make video look like film? Well, my friends, even though Magic Bullet makes miracles, you don’t, especially when you have the budget to shoot on film! Now, some of you might be wondering why I find myself talking about filmmaking here. I am discussing this today, because of the visual train wreck that is the new Dior Homme short!

If the amazing lack of acting chops of Charlie Westerberg wasn’t enough, the artificial grain added to the footage,most notably the sliding scratches, makes it look amateurish at best. Not that Yours Truly doesn’t like Lo-Fi footage, or footage that was graded to resemble it for that matter, but, in this particular case, the rather unskillful ”CC” ruined it for us.

It’s a pitiful shame, since it’s, by far, Kris Van Assche‘s most accomplished work to date at Dior Homme…

OOTW #2 Update – Passion Pit

It’s with mixed feelings that Yours Truly brings you great news today. Mixed feelings caused by the simple fact that he will be overseas when former OOTW, Passion Pit, will visit his hometown!

The indie phenom will be featured on this year’s lineup at Quebec’s Summer Festival, appearing on July 8th at 8pm!

For all of you out there that have to dial in 514 on a daily basis, driving 3 hours eastbound won’t be necessary… They will appear in MTL on July 12th at the National! Tickets will go on sale this friday April 23rd at noon for a mere $20.

Enjoy it.. because I won’t get to.

Obsession O’ The Week #24 – frYars

Yours Truly‘s love for Lo-Fi is undeniable, however, in this installement of OOTW, he went in the opposite direction and eagerly dived in the realm of over-production! Long gone are the days where Joy Division and, subsequently, Depeche Mode reigned supreme, but the genre is still far from having thumped its last beat, heartbeat that is. While many see The Horrors has being entitled to the heirlooms of the Post-Punk bourgeoisie, London’s own Ben Garrett, known as frYars, might have a shot at the throne if any unfortunate events were to take place!

His warbly tones and melodramatic electropop, as you will witness in The Ides, surely verify that his blood runs oh so very blue!

When one thinks of Iceland, icebergs, hot springs and indie music usually stand out. However sad being so rapidly circumspected might sound to any Icelander reading this, it is still way preferable than being known as those rather mature-looking hockey villains from the ever-so kitsch and abyssal depths of Emilio Estevez’s post-Robert Hugues career, but then again, who would remember that!

The brightest star shining upon the septentrional capital music scene these past few years is arguibly Reykjavik’s own Seabear. They are to Iceland what Beck is to America, adding a subtle yet enticing lo-fi filter to their moody folk music! Even though, they’ve been out there for quite some time, their second LP, We Built a Fire, hitting the shelves this week and their upcoming performance at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern on March 31st prompted us to introduce Sigfusson & Co to you officially.

Ergo, here’s I Sing, I Swim off their debut album, The Ghost That Carried Us Away, enjoy!
